Totaldac has introduced the d1-CD, a CD transport engineered to serve as a definitive reference in digital source technology. Utilizing the Austrian CD-PRO8 mechanism, the d1-CD incorporates extensive research from the development of Totaldac’s digital-to-analog converters, reclockers, and streamers.
The design team meticulously evaluated every element of the d1-CD, equipping it with specialized oscillators, a dedicated clock distribution system, a unique S/PDIF generator, a robust copper base plate, vibration-damping feet, intelligent ground distribution, and both electromagnetic and mechanical damping features. Additionally, it includes a live transformer and dedicated power supply filtering. Fine-tuning was conducted using Totaldac’s premier system and in comparison with a high-fidelity analog reel-to-reel recorder.

The oscillator achieves an impressive rms jitter of just 40 femtoseconds, a remarkably low figure. The external power supply offers superior galvanic isolation compared to standard mains supplies, which is evident in the noise spectrum when powering a DA converter, as it eliminates minor spurious lines unrelated to mains frequency. This improvement also positively impacts the CD mechanism, despite it only outputting a digital signal. The external power supply further prevents the transmission of mechanical vibrations or electromagnetic interference to the CD mechanism, digital signals, or oscillator.
At the core of the d1-CD is a solid copper base plate, similar to that used in Totaldac’s DA converters, which is isolated from the drive by four conical springs and four silicone rubber dampers. The copper plate is separated from the base by three anti-vibration feet featuring integrated ball bearings. The carbon intermediate plate and cover are also damped with ferrite rubber.
The d1-CD is equipped with two digital outputs: one S/PDIF cinch and one XLR AES-EBU.
