Wilson Benesch IGx: Infrasound Generator for Earthquake Simulation priced at $32,000

Wilson Benesch, a British company, has rolled out the IGx active subwoofer, which they like to call an infrasound generator. This new gadget is said to deliver bass as low as 12 Hz, making it possible to recreate earthquake-like rumbles in your home theater or listening space.

For context, the lowest note that musical instruments can hit is 15.3 Hz, which is what you’d find on a big church organ. While musical notes have their limits, film soundtracks can go beyond that. The Wilson Benesch IGx can hit 12 Hz (and even dip to 5 Hz at -3 dB), allowing it to reproduce those deep musical notes or lay down a solid low-frequency base for your surround sound setup.

The Wilson Benesch IGx Active Subwoofer boasts an impressive 18-inch dynamic driver with dual voice coils. Its specially crafted cone, made from carbon fiber and polyethylene terephthalate, delivers precise sound for bass drums and timpani in orchestral music. Weighing in at only 110 grams, this unique cone material combines fiber and resin, woven in Europe just for Wilson Benesch. The company claims this material leads the industry in both strength and shock absorption.

Wilson Benesch IGx Infrasound GeneratorThe IGx takes cues from musical instruments with its smooth, rounded shape that helps eliminate any unwanted resonance. Unlike standard dynamic drivers, it skips the basket entirely; instead, the lightweight diffuser is precisely positioned and managed by two 82mm voice coils and a pair of strong NdFeB magnets working in a push-pull setup.

Wilson Benesch IGx Infrasound GeneratorThe IGx subwoofer driver is powered by a Class D amplifier that delivers 100 watts continuously (with a peak of 500 watts). Unlike many other subwoofers that need a ton of power to operate effectively, the IGx is easier on the gain settings. Plus, thanks to improvements in Class D amplifier technology, it achieves better performance than the older Torus subwoofer models.

The IGx subwoofer features a unique enclosure crafted from extruded aluminum panels that are securely attached to a hefty aluminum base, which is carved from a single block. Its sturdy design is reinforced by 13mm steel braces running vertically and a robust 8mm steel cross brace that’s been laser-cut for precision. The lower platform is made from a 50kg aluminum billet, helping to lower the overall center of gravity. The subwoofer’s driver faces upward and can be protected by a grille that attaches magnetically.

You can now grab the Wilson Benesch IGx Infrasonic Generator for a retail price of $32,000.
