Rega Elex-R: Powerful, high-end integrated amplifier

The Rega Elex-R amplifier, at first glance, bears a strong resemblance to its predecessor, the Rega Elicit-R. It features a standard 43-centimeter width and a height of 8 cm, with a chassis design that is quite similar. One notable external distinction is the lack of a push-button panel for selecting recording output sources and the absence of a “direct” playback mode. These changes suggest some functional reductions when compared to the Elicit-R, aligning it more closely with the Brio-R, which offers a straightforward selection of five sources and a conventional volume control potentiometer. However, it is important to note that this model is not merely a scaled-down version of the Brio-R.

The Rega Elex-R amplifier features the same phono preamp board as its higher-end integrated amplifier counterpart. Additionally, it offers significantly greater power compared to the Rega Brio amplifier, and it incorporates output stages that mimic class A operation. This distinctive characteristic is a hallmark of all the amplifiers discussed, with only Roy Gandhi, Rega’s chief engineer, fully understanding the intricacies of this unique circuit design, which utilizes carefully selected complementary pairs of Darlington transistors at the output.

The practical benefits of this “A-emulation” are clearly audible. The Rega Elex-R impresses with its exceptional ability to create a vivid, almost tangible soundstage even at lower volume levels, outperforming its counterparts. In contrast, the Rega Brio-R tends to lack air and scale, resulting in slightly blurred outlines of sound sources. While the older model boasts an impressive soundstage overall, it begins to lose its sense of realism when the listening volume is reduced from the typical levels.

In addition to the fact that Rega Elex-R is capable of producing a visible stereo image, I would also note high harmonic resolution in this amplifier. Few people can dig deep and bring to light the most subtle timbral shades. They give the sound naturalism, frankness and that musical expressiveness that sometimes has nothing in common with the banal beauty of the sound. This property of Elex-R captivates, even when you listen to phonograms of far from brilliant audiophile quality.

Future users should consider two important factors. Firstly, the amplifier does not conceal imperfections; if any dirt is present in the recording, it is likely to accentuate it. Secondly, careful selection of speakers is essential. The Rega Elex-R amplifier, while not overly dynamic, has a straightforward and somewhat coarse character. Therefore, it is advisable to choose lighter, more delicate speakers with traditional cellulose drivers and silk tweeters, rather than heavier models that demand high power, even if it means sacrificing some frequency range. This approach will facilitate excellent bass control without distortion, as well as precise detailing in the higher frequencies and a truthful, well-defined midrange, which the Elex-R can deliver as effectively as any true Class A amplifier.

Traditionally for Rega, the device is assembled on a stamped chassis made of 2.5 mm thick steel sheet. The top cover is the same. Heat sinks of the output transistors are fixed on the side walls of the case. Each channel has a pair of 160-watt complementary Darlington STD03N / STD03P with a built-in diode. The company does not parallel powerful transistors in principle in order to get a more accurate, detailed sound. And the entire signal path is extremely laconic.

The energy indicators are provided by a solid, 800 watt, torus, 6-amp diodes and Samhwa filter capacitors 10,000 μF x 50 V. There is also a low-current source for powering the control circuits. Interstage capacitors are WIMA film, the input switching is organized on high-quality relays.
